The top attraction for Peru vacations is Machu Picchu, once a summer residence of the Ancient Inca’s ruling class. At first glance the brochures may leave out one important consideration which is how to reach these mountain top ruins. Tourists these days can access this ancient abandoned city by train or helicopter. You can also get there the more traditional way – by hiking the Inca Trail. This may not be the most luxurious route but for the physically fit it it is a memorable experience.

You can find affordable accommodations at Machu Picchu near the Puente Ruinas train station. Another option is the Hotel Macchu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, located inside the ruins at some 8,100 feet above sea level. These lodgings are ideal for avid archeology buffs, but be prepared to pay for that location!

Cuzco, Peru is known as the gateway to Machu Picchu, but it is also a fascinating place to visit in its own right. You will find many spectacular sites from both Spanish Colonial and Inca periods. There are far more hotel rooms in Cuzco that Machu Picchu, and many visitors opt to stay here (with better hotel prices), and take the round trip train service to Machu Picchu to see the ruins as a day trip. Word of warning – at 11,024 feet elevation, the city of Cuzco is in the thin air, indeed. If you are not accustomed to high altitudes, plan to spend some easy time here to let your body get acclimated, before tackling any strenuous activities.

Eco tourism in the rainforest of Peru is gaining in popularity. Rain forest lodging and guided tours can be arranged through Rainforest Expeditions of Lima, Peru or Tropical Nature Travel in Selva Sur, among others. Amazon conservation efforts like the ones at the Manu Wildlife Center are rugged, and draw the more adventurous travelers. This is a pretty demanding environment, so most travelers will want to travel here as part of a guided tour package.

Pacific beaches. Puerto Chicamam is a top Pacific Coast destination for surfers visiting Peru, due to its reputation for having the world’s longest wave. This north coast beach is not the preferred destination of beach combers however, who may prefer the calmer beauty of resort town Punta Sal. Whichever coastal location or water activity you prefer, there is no question that the South American country of Peru has plenty of coastline for you to discover and enjoy.

Exploring Peru is easier than ever before because of the Pan-American Highway which connects many of its better known attractions. This vast highway makes traveling the western side of South America easier and more practical than ever before.

Whether your interests tend toward beaches, mountains, art or archaeology, there is something for you in Peru!
